An Ericsson position paper for W3C workshop on Position Dependent Information Services Feb 2000on CC/PP by Johan Hjelim with a big section on iCalendar and it's usefulness in context dependent services..."Users may also make requests for information that is not currently relevant, but will be at the time of the validity of the request. Planning is a feature of most calendaring systems, and the iCal system of the IETF is intended to address this issue [SKI]". Skical is highly relevant here. Also an RDF skical example.

Efficiently Supporting Temporal Granularities (1999)
by libby
on 2001-04-26 23:54:47
Granularity is an integral feature of temporal data. For instance, a person's age is commonly given to the granularity of years and the time of their next airline ight to the granularity of minutes . A granularity creates a discrete image, in terms of granules , of a (possibly continuous) time-line. We present a formal model for granularity in temporal operations that is integrated with temporal indeterminacy, or \don't know when" information. We also minimally extend the syntax and semantics of SQL-92 to support mixed granularities. This support rests on two operations, scale and cast, that move times between granularities, e.g., from days to months. Full text (ps), references and citatiions available.

Implementing Calendars and Temporal Rules in Next Generation Databases
by libby
on 2001-04-26 23:53:35
In applications like financial trading, scheduling, manufacturing and process control, time based predicates in queries and rules are very important. There is also a need to define sets of time points or intervals. We refer to these sets as calendars. This paper presents a system of calendars that allows specification of natural-language time-based expressions, maintenance of valid time in databases, specification of temporal conditions in database queries and rules, and user-defined semantics for date manipulation. A simple set based language is proposed to define, manipulate and query calendars. Full text (ps) and references and citations available.
